Q: Can I build my own steam room?

A: One can construct them almost like showers, only they have to be totally enclosed. Cement board needs to be behind the tile or slate or whatever materials you would like to use. This includes the walls as well as the ceiling. In some states code and common sense requires putting a 6-12 mil vapor barrier behind the cement boards and below the floor area before the floor is poured. If possible slope your ceiling 1-2 inches away from the bather and the door.

It is suggested, to have the generator and controls on site before beginning the project so that one can tie into the drain line. There are 2 things going to the generator. a) power b) water ( install a small water filter ) There are 2 things leaving the generator. a) steam pipe b) drain pipe.

You will need to bring 220 power to it. For commercial construction it may be 208 triple or single phase. Depending on what size Steam room you are planning on and what types of material you want to use inside the steam room, will determine what kilowatt generator you will need.
